Thanks for the help

This semester, thanks to you you, we at Illustration at Cumbria, have been able to deliver a thoroughly considered and industry targeted programme of learning across all year groups.

Partnering with industry experts connects our students to the world of illustration, building the understanding that they're not outside looking in, but already at the party!

Your input has been invaluable, informative and invigorating; for this, we thank you.

Here are some samples of the work that you have been part of informing over this last 12 weeks.

An Audience with...
The tuesday sessions

Being based in Carlisle, Cumbria, it's easy for our students to feel dislocated from an industry which can appear to exist only in London and other cosmopolitan centres. To foster connection, we set up our 'An Audience with...' sessions. Thanks to you, these sessions offer an unprecedented insight into the world of contemporary illustration; allowing our students to talk directly to leading artists and illustrators; connecting them and their work to industry and informing their ongoing project work and development.

Stamps

Supported by Jill Calder

Despite being a classic staple of the illustration curriculum, this is the first time we've delivered a stamp illustration project. Written to highlight the importance of research, this project asked students to propose a series of commemorative stamps celebrating an aspect of 'britishness' of their choice.

We were supported by illustrator and force of nature, Jill Calder who shared just some of her recent research based projects, gave advice and got everyone fired up in general.

book jackets

Supported by Scholastic and Sarah 'Inkymole' Coleman

Book jacket design / illustration is another staple of any illustration curriculum. The annual Penguin Design awards took a hiatus this year, prompting us to provide student's with a project with more industry input than ever before.

Working with Senior designers from Scholastic Books we wrote a brief asking students to design 3 titles from Scholastic's own 'Classics' in the age range of 10-13. Outcomes had to suffice as a pitch for all titles in the collection, so had to show aesthetic cohesion and had to work across a range of market places - requirements that provided a real industry flavour.

Students were also joined for a midpoint feedback session by Sarah 'Inkymole' Coleman, an illustrator with incredible experience and success in this field (and who had actually produced covers for a number of the titles available to students).

Student Websites

For several years now our students have been supported by 34sp.com who provide web hosting, URL, content management and support to all of our students for the entirety of their studies and a short period beyond. Thanks to their generosity our students begin building a web portfolio, presenting work on screen and collating all of their research and development from week-1; by third year our students are well equipped to maintain a web portfolio and online presence.

Here are some sample student and graduate sites.

brochure

We were grateful for the help of 4 of our graduates in putting together a new course brochure for use at a recent event in Manchester. Yvette Earl, Ed Murray, Harry Ward and Rachel Tunstall were kind enough to provide examples of their work as well as some insight into their course experience. Their words are worth infinitely more to applicants than anything we could say, so we're very appreciative for their help.

INSTAGRAM

Due to password issues, interplanetary alignments and a dodgy horoscope reading, we've had to move to a new instagram account this semester. Feel free to give us a follow.
